Fatima Aliyu, a final-year Community Health Extension Worker student at Bubayero College, has been honoured with the prestigious National Community Health Innovation Award for her groundbreaking project titled “Mobile Health Education for Remote Communities: Bridging Healthcare Gaps Through Technology.”

The award, presented by the Nigerian Association of Community Health Practitioners during their annual conference in Abuja, recognises innovative solutions that address critical challenges in community healthcare delivery. Fatima’s project was selected from over 200 submissions nationwide, making her achievement particularly remarkable.

Her innovative project involves developing a mobile application that delivers health education content in local languages, specifically targeting remote communities with limited access to healthcare information. The app includes modules on maternal health, child nutrition, disease prevention, and emergency first aid, all designed to be accessible without internet connectivity.

“I identified that many rural communities lack access to basic health information due to language barriers and poor internet connectivity,” Fatima explained. “My solution uses offline-capable technology to deliver essential health education directly to community members through their mobile phones.”

The project has already been piloted in five remote villages in Gombe State, reaching over 500 community members and demonstrating significant improvements in health knowledge and preventive care practices. Local health workers have reported increased community engagement and better health-seeking behaviours following the app’s introduction.

The award includes a N50,000 scholarship for her final semester, a mentorship opportunity with leading public health experts, and potential funding for project expansion. Additionally, the Nigerian Ministry of Health has expressed interest in scaling the project for national implementation.

“Fatima’s achievement exemplifies the calibre of innovative thinking we cultivate in our students,” said the Provost. “Her success demonstrates how our graduates can contribute to solving complex healthcare challenges through creativity and technology.”

This recognition further enhances Bubayero College’s reputation for producing graduates who make meaningful contributions to community health advancement and innovation.
