In a significant community service initiative, third-year students from Bubayero College, under the supervision of experienced faculty members, completed a week-long free health screening program that reached over 2,000 residents across 12 rural communities in Gombe State.
The comprehensive outreach program included essential health services such as blood pressure monitoring, diabetes screening, basic eye examinations, nutritional assessments, and general health consultations. Additionally, the team conducted health education sessions focusing on preventive care, proper hygiene practices, family planning, and maternal health awareness.
“This initiative provides our students with invaluable real-world experience while addressing critical healthcare needs in underserved communities,” said Dr. Ibrahim Musa, who coordinated the outreach program. “It’s a perfect example of how education and community service can work together to create a positive impact.”
The program identified several cases that required immediate medical attention, and patients were referred to the appropriate healthcare facilities. Common conditions detected included hypertension, diabetes, malnutrition in children, and various preventable diseases that could be managed through proper health education and lifestyle changes.
Community leaders expressed overwhelming gratitude for the services provided, with many requesting regular visits from the college. The program also strengthened partnerships between the college and local community health centres, creating opportunities for ongoing collaboration and student placement for practical training.
This outreach initiative is part of the college’s broader commitment to community engagement and will be expanded to reach additional communities throughout the academic year.
